Professor Valdivia is a research professor at the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her main research areas include popular culture, transnational communications, race and media studies of Latino/a intersectional identity, children’s media studies, gender and media studies, etc. Professor Valdivia was the editor-in-chief of the SSCI journal Communication Theory from 2008 to 2011, and edited the volumes International Encyclopedia of Media Studies and A Companion to Media Studies.
