Abstract:

The thesis addresses the questions of the culture and the class identity of the working class youth. In China, occupational education has been a primary way for young worker to get jobs in cities. Ordinary life experiences shape their imagination on social relationship. Typically, they simplify the social mobility as occupational mobility, which not only enriches the study of working culture but also influences the identity recognition. In the case of T restaurant in Shanghai, the young workers are investigated to address the dilemma in cultural studies of workers. In the study of informal culture, differentiating between young workers and formal institution is closely examined.

In the study of the assimilation, the working culture of young workers appears to be complicated and inconsistent, and it produces ideology that cannot well articulate the young workers’ imagination with their living reality. The young workers think a lot of their own feelings and personal time; they prefer part-time jobs and changing jobs quickly. Besides, usually they use the discourse of successful entrepreneurs to understand their difficulty in living and working. It is important to turn to the young workers' daily life to describe and to reconstruct the labor culture of the young workers.
